Our FC-Test benchmark is split into three parts. First is a write test involving the creation of a file pattern similar to common files such as MP3s or large video files. Once created on the drive, we then copy the file pattern from the drive back to a different folder on the same drive producing a combined read/write test. Finally we test the read speed of the drive by performing FC-Test's read test on the files copied.
For our benchmarks, we're using both the MP3 pattern, consisting of two hundred and seventy small files totalling 0.99GB, and the the ISO pattern, consisting of three large files totalling 1.6GB in size. We feel these file patterns represent the most common files people will be frequently copying to and from an drive, and can be interpreted as as close to a real world file transfer test as possible.

Wow! The VelociRaptor is an absolute beast when it comes to writing our 0.99GB MP3 file, clocking in with a time of just 11.4 seconds - almost 15 percent faster than the Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB and only bettered by the ludicrously expensive SLC based X25-E! It's clear that the combination of low latency and high drive speed is doing the business here, making the Raptor very nippy indeed when it comes to real world write speeds and far faster than all of the MLC based SSDs we've tested.

Sadly though, the Raptor's low platter density mean it's unable to better the Samsung when both reading and writing files, with a time of 8.46 seconds for our copy test - just under a second slower than the Samsung. We must admit this is a little disappointing considering the Raptor's price premium.

Read speeds however are excellent, with the VelociRaptor comfortably the fastest mechanical drive we've ever tested and even managing to surpass the single drive controller equipped 128GB G.Skill SSD! This is very impressive performance for a mechanical drive and places the Raptor as a real contender against even the newest SSDs.
